Factors Affecting the Normal Use of Sanding Wheels

Sanding wheel is one of the main grinding tools. Due to the different abrasives, binders and manufacturing processes, the characteristics of various sanding wheels are very different, which has an important impact on the machining quality, productivity and economy of grinding. Here are some factors affecting the normal use of sanding wheels.

1. The speed of sanding wheel

The maximum working linear velocity is specified on the label of the sanding wheel. Before use, it must be confirmed whether the rotating speed of the machine tool spindle is within the linear velocity range of the sanding wheel. Sometimes you should not only check the motor speed of the machine tool, but also calculate the speed ratio of the belt disc.

Some machine tools are with stepped speed regulation, so operators should notice  that don't mistakenly adjust the speed higher than the linear velocity of sanding wheels.

2. Normalization of operation

Operators sometimes do not follow the process requirements. For example, the feed rate is specified to be 2 threads per time, while some operators make the feed rate reach 5 threads at a time in order to increase the output. In this case, it is difficult for the sanding wheel to work normally, leading to burn of the work piece. As for the burned surfaces, some blue burn marks do not show up, but the hardness of the work piece has been lowered, causing a great impact on the quality of the work piece.

3. Diamond dresser

The angle between the diamond pen and the normal line of the sanding wheel should be 15°. The diamond pen should be rotated, so different faces can be used to keep the pen sharp for a long time.

4. Maintenance of grinder

According to the safety maintenance requirements, the machine tool needs regular maintenance. If the regular maintenance work is lacking in order to save money, the machine tool might be in poor condition. For example, the accuracy of the spindle is lowered or the bearing is excessively worn, causing an adverse impact on grinding.  

5. Instability of the processed work piece

It is mainly manifested in the instability of dimensional allowance and the fluctuation of heat treatment hardness.

6. Reliability of cooling system

When there are scratches on the surface of the work piece, the filtration of the cooling system is the key besides the impure abrasive granularity. If the filtration is not good, the metal chips will be recycled to the grinding area, causing scratches on the work piece surface. In addition, that whether the flow of coolant is sufficient would directly affect the sanding wheel.
