Varieties and Uses of Abrasive Paper

Sandpaper is widely used in various industries, including mobile phones, cars, wooden products, and various molds and models. Sandpaper also plays an important role in the coating process.

Sandpaper is generally divided into dry abrasive paper, wet abrasive paper, and sponge abrasive paper. They all use adhesives to bond different abrasives and abrasive paper substrates together.

Sponge abrasive paper

Sponge abrasive paper is a major tool in sanding technology, used for polishing slippery parts, and can be made from various materials. Sponge abrasive paper has the characteristics of high production efficiency, good surface quality of processed products, and low production cost.

Therefore, it is widely used in furniture production. The research of furniture products' surface quality is closely related to sanding technology.

Dry abrasive paper

Dry abrasive paper uses synthetic resin as the adhesive to bond silicon carbide abrasives onto latex paper. It is coated with an anti-static coating to make it a high-end product with the advantages of anti-clogging, anti-static, good flexibility, and high wear resistance.

It comes in a variety of finenesses and is suitable for polishing metal surfaces, wooden surfaces, putty and coatings. It generally uses special cowhide paper and latex paper, and natural and synthetic resins as the adhesive.

It is made by advanced high-pressure electrostatic sanding technology, with the characteristics of high grinding power and not easy to clog. It is suitable for dry sanding.

Dry abrasive paper, also known as dry sanding paper, has larger gaps between the sand grains, and larger debris is produced during sanding. Because of the larger gaps, debris will fall off on its own during use, so it does not need to be used with water.

Dry abrasive paper is widely used in industries such as woodworking, stone processing, precision mold polishing, and synthetic material processing, and is widely used in industries such as furniture and decoration.

The use of dry abrasive paper in the process of wood wax oil construction

In the process of wood wax oil construction, we often talk about abrasive papers of different sizes used for sanding wood. Here, we are talking about dry abrasive paper and not wet abrasive paper.

The auxiliary materials needed in the process of wood wax oil construction are water-resistant abrasive paper, animal glue for the bottom layer and composite glue, and brown corundum as abrasive. It is suitable for processing the surface of wood and for sanding wall decorations.

Wet abrasive paper

Wet abrasive paper, also known as water sandpaper or water-resistant abrasive paper, can be used for sanding with water. The abrasive material of water sandpaper is generally silicon carbide, and the paper substrate is usually cowhide paper.

There are also high-end products, such as imported 3M water-resistant abrasive paper. The paper substrate is often latex paper, which has the characteristics of good flexibility, stronger adhesion to the abrasive surface, making the abrasive paper more durable, and the particles more uniform, resulting in a superior polishing effect.

The gaps between the abrasive particles of water sandpaper are relatively small compared to dry abrasive paper, and the debris produced during sanding is also small. When used with water, the debris will flow out with the water, effectively maintaining the sharpness of the abrasive paper surface during use.

Water abrasive paper is widely used in stone polishing, hardware processing, mold processing, wall atomization ash sanding, car body sanding, rust removal, paint removal, and other industries.

The use of water sandpaper in daily life

Water abrasive paper also has a significant effect in daily life. It can be used to polish the teeth of combs to make them smooth. For some combs with too sharp teeth, water sandpaper can be used to make them smooth and slick.

Water abrasive paper can also be used for painting. Oil pastels can be used to paint on water sandpaper, and the rough surface of the abrasive paper can highlight the brilliant and delicate colors of the oil pastels.

The use of water sandpaper to carefully polish the rubber sheet of the wiper, especially the scratched area on the glass, can restore the wiper to its original state.

Common misconceptions in the use of abrasive paper

Using old abrasive paper is equivalent to using abrasive paper with a higher grit number

Old abrasive paper means that the cutting power is reduced and the heat production is increased. If you feel that the sanding speed is too slow, you can use new abrasive paper, or maybe use a grit number that is one level lower.

The harder you press on the abrasive paper, the faster you will sand

Increasing the pressure will only increase the wear and tear of the abrasive paper and the heat generated, and may even burn the wood. Generally, sanding only requires very light pressure, allowing the abrasive paper and the object being sanded to do the work, which is both effortless and prolongs the life of the abrasive paper, and the speed is not slow at all.

Using only one grit of abrasive paper until the end

Many beginners only buy one grit of abrasive paper, which makes the power very low.

Sanding is a tedious and boring process

If you feel that way, it is generally because the sanding process is not progressing visibly, indicating that the grit of the abrasive paper is too high or too old and needs to be replaced with new abrasive paper.
