Development and Classification of Abrasive Belts in Abrasive Materials

1. How is the abrasive belt of abrasive materials developed step by step?

Abrasive belt grinding is a form of grinding with a coated abrasive tool (commonly known as abrasive paper, abrasive cloth). As early as 1760, the first abrasive paper appeared in the world, but it was limited to manual operation at that time.

It was not until 1900 to 1910 that it entered the era of mechanical use of abrasive paper and abrasive cloth, and it was first used in the wood industry in the form of a cyclic annular belt. This kind of mechanical grinding with annular belt abrasive cloth is the rudiment of abrasive belt grinding.

After 1930, abrasive belt grinding gradually developed in the direction of metal processing. During World War II, the United States took the lead in using abrasive belt grinding in weapon manufacturing and achieved obvious results.

In the early 1950s, the emergence of the electrostatic sand planting method pushed the abrasive belt grinding to a new stage, and the application of abrasive belt grinding became more and more popular.

Later, Europe and Japan also successively carried out research and application of abrasive belt grinding technology, and abrasive belt grinding technology gradually developed into an independent processing technology field with complete categories and relatively complete technical system.

Compared with the abrasive paper, the development time of abrasive belts is relatively late, and some difficulties were encountered at the beginning of development.

The development of abrasive cloth in China began at the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1959. In the process of manufacturing aircraft engines, the engine blades could not be processed with abrasive wheels.

Soviet experts suggested the use of abrasive belts. Since both Soviet and Chinese experts were unfamiliar with abrasive belts, they later found the English book "Modern Coated Abrasive Tool" in the British Embassy.

This book opened the door to the world's advanced coated abrasive tools for China. Through the study of this book, Chinese experts began to understand the abrasive belt, and also began to trial-produce the abrasive belt. In 1960, China's first annular abrasive belt was born in Shanghai, at the Shanghai Grinding Wheel Factory.

Now, the production of abrasive belts of abrasive materials has been mechanized and automated. While exclaiming over the development achievements of abrasive belts, we must not forget the decision makers who dedicated their own future to the abrasive belt business.

2. The composition of the abrasive belts

Abrasive belt is a kind of belt-shaped tool that can be used for grinding and polishing, which is made by using adhesive to bond abrasives on flexible materials such as paper and cloth. It is a main form of coated abrasive tools.

Its basic composition is base material, abrasives and binder, collectively known as the three elements of the abrasive belt.

3. Classification of the abrasive belt

Due to the differences in the three major components of the abrasive belt and various characteristic factors, the abrasive belt can be divided into many varieties according to different grinding objects, grinding conditions and grinding requirements.
