Classification and Application of Abrasive Paper in Metal Processing

According to different abrasive materials, there are various types of abrasive paper, such as emery paper, artificial emery paper, glass abrasive paper, etc. Dry abrasive paper is used to polish the surfaces of wood and bamboo products. Waterproof sandpaper is used to polish the surfaces of metal or non-metal workpieces in water or oil.

Sponge Sandpaper

It is suitable for polishing smooth parts, and can be used on various materials. The sanding process of sponge sandpaper has the characteristics of high production efficiency, good surface quality of processed products, and low production cost. Therefore, it is widely applied in furniture production and has a close relationship with the final surface quality of furniture products. Sponge sandpaper is the main tool for sanding process.

Dry Abrasive Paper

Dry abrasive paper uses synthetic resin as a binder to bond silicon carbide abrasive onto latex, and is coated with an anti-static coating to make high-grade products. It has advantages such as anti-clogging, anti-static, good flexibility, and high wear resistance. It is available in multiple grit sizes and is suitable for sanding metal surfaces, putty, and coatings. Dry abrasive paper generally uses special kraft paper and latex paper, and uses natural and synthetic resins as binders. It is manufactured through advanced high-static embedding technology. This product has high grinding efficiency and is not easily clogged, making it suitable for dry sanding. It is widely used in furniture, decoration, and other industries, especially for coarse sanding.

Wet Abrasive Paper

It has a finer texture and is suitable for sanding things with delicate textures, and is also suitable for post-processing. The gaps between the sand particles of wet abrasive paper are small, and the resulting particles are also small. When used with water, the particles will flow away with the water. Therefore, it needs to be used with water. If dry abrasive paper is used, the particles will remain in the gaps between the sand particles, causing the surface of the abrasive paper to become shiny and not achieve its intended effect. However, dry abrasive paper is not so troublesome. The gaps between its sand particles are larger, and the resulting particles are also larger. During the sanding process, the particles will fall off due to the large gaps, so it does not need to be used with water.

Waterproof Sandpaper

Waterproof sandpaper, also known as wet sandpaper or water sandpaper, is named because it can be soaked or used in water during use. Waterproof emery sandpaper is made by firmly bonding corundum or silicon carbide abrasives on waterproof paper or water-resistant processed paper with paint or resin as a binder. It comes in two shapes: sheet and roll. Its characteristics are as follows:

  • It is produced using a synchronized production line, which has high efficiency.

  • Since waterproof sandpaper uses varnish as a binder, it has a long drying time, and the drying method is generally hanging drying.

  • Waterproof sandpaper is generally fine-grained, and the grit size of water sandpaper starts from P80, which is seamlessly connected with the grit size of metallographic abrasive paper.

  • Waterproof sandpaper is generally used for polishing operations in wet conditions, so there is less dust and good working conditions.
